A Prayer for Starting a New Year Fresh
from The Book of Common Prayer:
This prayer is intended to be used on New Year’s Day. But I think it’s appropriate for Labour Day as well. The new school year, like New Year’s Day, gives us the opportunity to consider and confess what’s behind. Then we can “reach forward to what lies ahead” (Philippians 3:13 NASB). If you find yourself in need of a fresh start, then go ahead and make one.
O immortal Lord God, who inhabitest eternity,
and hast brought thy servants to the beginning of another year:
Pardon, we humbly beseech thee, our transgressions in the past,
bless to us this New Year,
and graciously abide with us all the days of our life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
(Collect for the Octave Day of Christmas, that is, New Year’s Day)
